Social Platforms are only Tools

Don’t Rely on Tools to build Your Business

I see the same old problem with Business owners day in and day out. Every time I speak on stage or teach people how to use Social Media for their business, I always , always , always make sure to let people know that Social Platforms are only tools to build your business, and NOT the foundation.

Let me explain a little further.

If I was to build a house and I relied on solely a hammer to build it, it would never get built. If that hammer ever broke, then I would not be able to build anything at all. If I had a box of all the RIGHT tools to build the house, and I wasn’t reliant on only the hammer, then my house would get built.

Its the same with Social Media for your business. Facebook, Twitter , YouTube etc are only TOOLS  that you should use to build your business. Facebook is a great platform if you use it to establish relationships, connect with others and inform those people of your value.

The main idea is to ‘control’ the situation. Facebook owns everything you put on it. If you spend a massive amount of time to build your audience on facebook and nurture those relationships and ONLY use facebook, and for some strange reason, you lose your account ( this is a regular occurrence, see this persons account of their lost profile and how easy it was to lose) then your business is toast! You may have your account hacked and facebook deem you a pest or a spammer and close you down instantly. Have yo ever seen a phone number for facebook help????  It doesn’t exist. They don’t care about your page or the story you may have that goes along with your tail of woe.

Social Platforms are only tools

My point is that whether it’s Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn or any of the other myriads of Social Media platforms out there, you need to control the racecourse. Make sure that the #1 priority is to own the access to those people that you have spent time developing janitorial services san francisco. Ensure that your own website is where the main focus of your efforts are. All of the work you do on Social, should ultimately direct people back to your website and then connect with them there and add them to your list.

If any social site either decides to cut you off or even goes out of business ( think Myspace) then it wont affect your business model.

This whole post could be pages and pages , but I hope you get the idea that you need to be in control of the effort you put in and the results you get out of it
